Streets without limits: Audi and BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group present "Urban Future" at Design Miami/ 2011

  • LED exhibit “Urban Future” will allow visitors to interact with the city of tomorrow
  • Conceptual installation is based on a vision of a city that blurs the lines between roads, sidewalks and city squares
  • BIG founder Bjarke Ingels: “The street becomes a digital surface”

Visitors to Design Miami/ 2011 from November 30 to December 4 can interact with city of the future at a special exhibit on display at the show. Produced in cooperation with Audi AG and Copenhagen-based architect firm BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group, the interactive LED installation called “Urban Future” will feature a life-size rendering of a conceptual roadway based on new theories of transportation and infrastructure. The model also will feature the Audi A2 concept car, an all-electric vehicle that communicates with its surroundings.

The idea behind “Urban Future” was initially developed by BIG as their entry the 2010 Audi Urban Future Award 2010, an architecture and urban development competition that constitutes one of the pillars of the brand’s larger Urban Future Initiative. For Design Miami/ 2011, BIG founder Bjarke Ingels and Partner Andreas K. Pedersen have transformed their vision into an interactive LED installation that represents a section of the city of tomorrow. The hypothesis put forward by BIG visualizes streets that communicate with every road user, including pedestrians and vehicles.

“If I imagine a city in 25 years’ time, the vertical facades appear unchanged, but the roadway has become a digitally programmable surface. Fixed elements such as carriageways, sidewalks or city squares no longer exist” said Ingels. “The digital surfaces can be adapted to all road users and in this way control the traffic. On one single day, the street can change many times: from pedestrian area to highway, from city square to meadow.”

The Audi A2 concept is an important part of BIG’s’ installation. Audi presented the show car for the first time this year at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. BIG had a good reason for incorporating the A2 concept in his work: the car is able to communicate with its environment. For Ingels, this is a prerequisite for a networked, mobile future.

“The installation allows the visitor to experience the vision of a connected future. It answers one of the most fascinating questions of the Audi Urban Future Award in spatial terms,” said Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG. “It gives a living impression of how networking might appear in the city of the future and of how new opportunities for intelligent use of urban space might arise.”

The installation at Design Miami/ is visually reminiscent of a short section of road, and consists of a digitally programmable LED surface that senses movements, coordinates the various participants in traffic and adapts to their needs. 3D cameras record all movements and feed them into the LED surface, allowing the visitor to experience the communication between cars, pedestrians and the street at the show booth.

“Our long-term partner Audi has always used Design Miami/ as a platform to explore challenging issues in contemporary design”, says Marianne Goebl, Director of Design Miami/. “Audi’s collaboration with BIG projects us into a future where urban design and architecture interplay to create a flexible programmable environment. Audi to Advertise During Super Bowl XLVI

Audi’s Super Bowl spot will mark the fifth consecutive year for the brand the big game

Audi of America announced that it will advertise during Super Bowl XLVI, the brand’s fifth consecutive time as an advertiser in the big game. San Francisco-based Venables Bell & Partners is creating the spot.

“The Super Bowl continues to be a platform to showcase a brand’s creativity and voice. Audi was the first auto maker in its class to begin advertising in the Super Bowl five years ago and we’re once again excited to be a part of the action,” said Scott Keogh, chief marketing officer, Audi of America. “We’ve achieved record levels of awareness and showroom traffic with national consideration numbers showing significant spikes post game, and are confident that this year will follow suit.”

In last year’s “Release the Hounds” spot, Audi became the first Super Bowl advertiser in history to tag an ad with a Twitter hashtag. The adventurous spot, featuring the new Audi A8 flagship sedan, was a parody of individuals attempting to escape from the confines of old luxury as portrayed in a luxury prison. The spot also featured a comical cameo by legendary musician Kenny G.

In 2010, Audi’s Super Bowl ad showcased a soundtrack created by rock legends Cheap Trick and featured the A3 TDI “Green Car of the Year” clean diesel vehicle, showing how easy being green can be. The brand’s 2009 spot featured actor Jason Statham in a series of high-speed chase scenes involving luxury competitors, sending the message that luxury is evolving. In 2008, the brand’s first Super Bowl spot delivered a parody of the movie “The Godfather,” signaling that Audi was ready to take on the perceived luxury leaders.

Throughout Super Bowl weekend for the past four years, Audi also has become known for producing highly attended and well received events at a specially-created Audi Forum in each market.

Title and 1-2-3-4-5-6 result for Audi at Valencia

  • With a podium finish Martin Tomczyk celebrates his first DTM title

Triumph at Valencia: With a 1-2-3-4-5-6 result and an early title win Audi managed to crown its 2011 DTM season. Mattias Ekström celebrated his third victory of the season, Filipe Albuquerque, as the runner-up, his first podium finish and Martin Tomczyk in third place is the new DTM Champion.

Third place was sufficient for Martin Tomczyk to be determined as the early title winner. With a 13-point advantage over his title rival, Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz), the Bavarian managed a special feat: For the first time he won the coveted DTM trophy, for the first time Audi Sport Team Phoenix achieved this with a year-old car, and it has been seven years that an Audi driver was determined as the champion even before the finale. In 2004, Mattias Ekström, who now celebrated overall victory at Valencia, had last secured an early title win. Tomczyk had managed a perfect recovery after having started from position ten on the grid. As early as on lap one he was on position six, and in third place after his second stop.

“I extend warm congratulations to Martin Tomczyk, his team and the entire Audi squad on this outstanding achievement. The fans experience captivating duels at the highest sporting level and in Martin an absolutely deserving champion of the 2011 season,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “After the triumph at the Le Mans 24 Hours and numerous other victories this title is already crowning a successful Audi motorsport year now.” His fellow board member Michael Dick, who is responsible for Technical Development, also congratulated the new champion: “’Well done’ to Martin Tomczyk, who has driven an outstanding season and always proved to be a fair and tremendous sportsman both on and off the track. At the same time, the fifth DTM title of the Audi A4 DTM since its debut in the 2004 season is a fantastic farewell gift. The development of our new Audi A5 DTM for the next season is concurrently in full swing. At Audi, we’re working on this car to follow in the successful footsteps of its predecessor with all our passion.”

The driver who definitely dominated the racing action in Spain was Mattias Ekström. The two-time champion led the field on 38 of the 45 laps. After the successes at the Nürburgring and Oschersleben the Swede from Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline celebrated his third race victory within four races. Behind him, Filipe Albuquerque complemented what was a perfect weekend for him. The DTM rookie from Portugal had started from position two, defended his place up to seeing the checkered flag, and thus gave himself and Audi Sport Team Rosberg the best result of the season. He finished 15.847 seconds ahead of Martin Tomczyk.

Subject to an appeal which two Mercedes-Benz teams have filed against the disqualification of their drivers, three other Audi racers finished in the subsequent places at Valencia. Timo Scheider, who managed setting the fastest lap, achieved fourth place in front of his Abt team-mates Miguel Molina and Oliver Jarvis. Mike Rockenfeller took ninth place, Rahel Frey 14th. Edoardo Mortara retired in the pits three laps before the end of the race due to a handling problem.

“This has been a fantastic day for Audi,” said a pleased Dr. Martin Mühlmeier, the Technical Director of Audi Sport. “Six Audi A4 DTM cars on the top six positions, Mattias Ekström has shown another top-class performance, Martin Tomczyk has clinched the title with a tremendous recovery on his own power, and Filipe Albuquerque has achieved his first podium result. We’re overjoyed.”

From the United States Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, who was on location at the ILMC race at Road Atlanta, sent his congratulations as well: “Absolutely well done, I’m tremendously happy for Martin. He has been a member of our Audi family in the DTM for eleven years and has experienced many ups and – no doubt – downs. But he has never lost his spirit and has emerged as a leader, particularly in this season. Now he has rewarded himself and his team for the hard work and the fighting spirit with the title. We’ve always known that Martin is a strong racer and a great guy – now he’s also a true champion.”

Audi to introduce roadside assistance app for customers with smartphones in the U.S.

Audi of America announced today that it will release a new Audi Roadside App for iPhone® users, as well as for Android® and some BlackBerry® devices.

The Audi Roadside App will be available for free download on iTunes®. BlackBerry users will be able to download the App on BlackBerry App World and Android device users can find it on the Android Market application.

The Audi Roadside App offers a range of leading-edge features that connect directly with Audi and its roadside assistance partner, Allstate Roadside Services. The app leverages the Audi customer’s pre-registered vehicle information, a smartphone’s GPS capabilities and an intuitive interface to help ease calls for roadside assistance.

The App works by accessing an Audi vehicle’s basic information, which is stored as part of the broader roadside assistance service.

The Audi of America Roadside Assistance program combines a team of qualified dedicated customer service professionals with a comprehensive nationwide towing network to bring Audi customers assistance when they need it most. Audi includes complimentary 24/7 roadside assistance on all new Audi models sold in the United States and Puerto Rico for four years of upon delivery or warranty activation. Owners of older models can use the Audi Roadside App, but Allstate roadside service fees would apply.

“With this technology, Audi is making a valuable service far easier for customers to access said David S. The Audi Roadside App offers the following features:

  • Vehicle registration – Drivers simply provide their Audi vehicle identification number (VIN) and some basic personal information to register the App with their customer information on file. This lets Audi Roadside Services know who you are when you request service and greatly shortens the time it takes to dispatch service.
  • Audi Roadside Assistance – With a few simple steps, the driver selects the type of service they require (e.g. jump start, fuel delivery, tire change or tow) and the App locates the driver via the smartphone’s GPS capabilities . The assistance request is sent to the Audi Roadside Assistance dispatcher as the call is connected to enable the dispatcher to provide faster service. Once the dispatch is complete, the App captures and conveniently stores the dispatch details including the name of the roadside provider en route to the customer and estimated time of arrival,.

Five-millionth Audi A4 leaves the assembly line

Today the Audi plant in Ingolstadt produced the five-millionth Audi A4 – an Audi A4 Avant 3.0 TDI quattro in Misano Red. This production milestone is the latest evidence of a success story that began in 1994 when the A4 model name was adopted. A great favorite with customers, the A4 accounts for a high proportion of production capacity at the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm plants.

In the words of Frank Dreves, Member of the Board of Management for Production at AUDI AG: “This is another major milestone in Audi’s history. All versions of the A4 are efficient, elegant and enjoy outstanding success in their class. Our highly motivated team and our effective Audi production system will keep this model on course for continued success in the future.” Audi began production of the A4 model line at its Ingolstadt site in 1994, and since 2007 has also been building it at Neckarsulm as part of the production turntable. Today the A4 Sedan, A4 Avant, A4 allroad quattro, S4 Sedan and S4 Avant are manufactured in Ingolstadt; the A4 Sedan also leaves the assembly line in Neckarsulm.

“The success of the entire A4 model family keeps our two main production plants fully occupied and safeguards the workforce’s jobs,” says Peter Mosch, Chairman of the General Works Council. “Audi owes this success to its employees, who have invested so much know-how, quality awareness and dedicated work in the A4.”

Peter Kössler, Ingolstadt Plant Manager, declares: “The A4 success story at this production plant is impressive evidence of the performance that the Ingolstadt team is capable of. As the assembly lines become more and more complex, the task can only be handled with lean processes and the motivation of a high-performance team – just like we have at Audi.”

With its sporty chassis and many comfort, convenience and infotainment features taken directly from the full-size category, the A4 is a perfect expression of Audi’s technical expertise. Customers and car journalists alike vote it to the top of the list, as proved by the many awards it has gained. Readers of the German car magazine auto motor und sport were evidently convinced: In January they chose the A4 as “best midsize car” for the fourth year in succession.

The Audi A4 also scores impressively on the list of German-market cars that keep their value best. Auto Bild car magazine and residual value assessor EurotaxSchwacke chose it as the midsize car with the highest value retention, and the Audi Q5 gained the same title in the compact SUV class. These “Top Value for 2011” awards were presented in December 2010.
